Donald Alfred Durant, Jr., age 89, passed away peacefully in Ukiah Adventist Hospital on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, after a long battle with multiple myeloma. Don was born on July 22, 1935 in Hanover, New Hampshire to father Donald Alfred Durant, Sr. and mother Goldie Durant. Don joined the U.S. Air Force as soon as he was old enough for enlistment, serving 20 years, with overseas assignments including Guam, England, France, and Vietnam. During his service in England he met his first wife, June, and their daughter Anita was born there. He retired from service in August 1972 at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. Those who knew Don well knew how proud he was of his country and he daily loved to look at the American flag flying outside his window. His friends even obtained special permission to have the flag erected outside his window when he was admitted to Mountain View Assisted Living Facility so he could always see Old Glory.
Having been based at Point Arena Radar Station prior to South Dakota, Don decided he liked California and settled in Ukiah where he remained until his passing.
Don had a lifelong passion for cars, so it was fitting that after military service he entered into the car business where he made many friends and became well known in Ukiah. He later became interested in restoring Porsche sports cars and showing them in numerous statewide venues where he won a number of awards. Don particularly enjoyed time spent with his wonderful friends and their shared interest in cars. He could usually be found in his garage happily working on his latest project.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, beloved sister Jane, and brothers Hollis and Richard. He is survived by his daughter, Anita, and several nieces and nephews.
At Don’s request, there will be no service but remembrances may be made in the form of donations to Volunteer Hospice of Ukiah or Ukiah Senior Center.
