Resident of Ukiah, California

Obituary:
Verna Faye (Salisbury) Haas passed away unexpectedly at home on January 18, 2011. Born on December 10, 1924 in Ukiah, CA to Ora Laverne Neil and Fount Andrew Salisbury she was the first of ten children. She is preceded in death by seven of her siblings, brothers Darrell, Larry, Kenneth, Ronald and Melvin and 2 sisters, Rubye Hagemeister and Ora Perin. She is survived by sisters, Leta Sprague of Redwood Valley, CA and Lois Suchan of Upper Lake, CA.

Verna attended Ukiah schools and always enjoyed the class reunions where she was able to reconnect with life long friends. She never went far from home, living for a very short time during her married life in Sonoma County and then North of Willits on the Dos Rios Covelo Road.

While growing up the family home was located at the corner of what is now Gobbi and Orchard Streets which at the time was “way out of town and just down the road from the baseball field” as Verna would tell her grandchildren, “where Safeway is now”. As we would drive through town she would often recall from her childhood the history of the Valley for them.

In August 1941 she married Alva William Haas. They were married 52 years before his passing in 1993. Verna and Alva had three children, baby Dennis Harvey whom they lost at birth, David Brent Haas (Cathy) and Judy Ann Anastasiou (Mike) but they always had an open door for anyone who needed love and care. Two children by love are Judy Lawless (Garry) of Abilene, TX and Cheryl Martinson of Sacramento, CA. In later years she was also especially close to Santiago Escutia.

Verna took great delight in her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchild. They include Merrill Haas (Lynelle) of Utah, Laurale Burden of Redwood Valley, CA. Tina Sellars (Gary), Cheryl Edgar (Randy), April Simmons (David), Katie Underwood (Joe) and Brent Haas (Heather) of Ukiah, Krista Seilhan of Willits, CA. Andrea Jelinek of Naples, ID. Tommie Lee Anastasiou of Willits, Richard “Ricky” Haas of Redding, CA and Mark Anastasiou. Great Grandchildren are Brandon and Britnie Haas, Ashley and Lonnie Burden, Nicole and Shalynn Sellars, Jennifer, Montana and Hailee Edgar, Madison Johnson, Aliera, Dierdra and Cage Seilhan, Jacob and Cade Jelinek, Kyle Simmons, Dylan, Samantha and Leann Underwood, Bradley Anastasiou and baby Ava due in April. Her one great, great grandchild is Brodie Johnson.
She is preceded in death by one great grandchild Wyatt Underwood.

Verna’s passions, besides spending time with her Family, were reading, writing letters in her beautiful penmanship style, listening to country music, keeping a journal which recounts over fifty years of daily family history and doing genealogy. During the 50's and 60's she also enjoyed submitting articles to the Ukiah Daily Journal society page. For her children and grandchildren she was a living dictionary. Always knowing the correct spelling and meaning of any word they needed. She was a good listener but also like a good debate, she kept every secret you ever told her and never criticized only offer wise council. She was a two-time cancer survivor.

She loved a good obituary that gave insight into the person being remembered and allowed for some genealogy research. We hope she is pleased with this one.

Services will be Monday, January 24 at 1 pm at the Russian River Cemetery Chapel conducted by her son, David.
