Potter Valley

Joshua Scott Freeman

Josh's story began in the mind of God before the creation of the first mountain, first tree or before the making of the first stars. It is among these beautiful outdoor spaces that Josh preferred to be.  Josh’s adventures on this earth began December 23, 1978 in Ukiah, California.   He passed away March 1, 2024 at the age of 45.  He leaves behind his loving family, siblings, Carey, Alison, Marcus, Melissa and Courtney, parents Randy and Sharon and his daughter Madyson. Josh lived most of his life in Potter Valley and Mendocino County.

He had a big heart and a way of making friends.  He touched so many people from all walks of life.  He could walk into a room with his big smile and his huge personality, and bring joy to those around him.

Josh was a part of the Potter Valley 4-H club and enjoyed showing pigs at the Redwood Empire Fair growing up. From a young age Josh was a sports enthusiast.  He always loved competition and sports, trying to have as much fun as possible along the way.  He played soccer, basketball, football and baseball.  What started out in the Ukiah little league program, became a lifelong joy of Josh’s.  He played co-ed and men’s softball whenever he could and enjoyed that time with family and friends.

Josh attended Deep Valley Christian School and Potter Valley Elementary School, then finished his high school years at Deep Valley.

He was a mountain man and had a passionate love of the outdoors. As Josh grew, so did his love of adventure. Hunting and fishing were some of his great joys. Hunting small animals as a boy turned into a love of hunting larger game, and some of his proudest moments are when Josh is showing off a recent catch of fish.  He loved to pond fish, river fish, and especially loved ocean fishing. Josh loved riding horses all his life.

He worked as a seasonal Christmas tree harvester and hay hauler, woodcutter, grape harvester and fisherman, always a fisherman. He loved the mountains, and the old time cowboy way of life.  Josh was a proud Californian and a fun loving free spirit.  He was a special kind of guy and definitely his own kind of man.  There’s a sense of wonder in how he fit all of these into his personality. He was someone who loved to smile and laugh and loved to have a good time. Josh was someone loved by us all. He will be missed.
