Obituary:
Pamela Hope Mitchell, 67, of Ukiah passed away on September 12, 2017 with family by her side.
She was born into this world at her Grandmother Mary Duncan’s house on the Round Valley Indian Reservation. She was a Nomalacki and Yuki Indian and was an enrolled tribal member of the Round Valley Indian Tribes. Pamela is survived by her sister Illace (Ida) Freeman and Aileen, step - brothers Leonard Freeman, Dave Freeman and Lawrence Tiny Freeman. Her beloved cousins that she was raised with Ronnie Hostler and his wife Lydia Hostler, Barbara Smith, Mary Long, Daphne Smith and Patricia Rabano. She was filled with an abundance of love for and from her numerous nieces and nephews.
She would spend her childhood being doted on by her older cousin Arvie Rabano who preceded her in death. Pamela is also preceded in death by her mother and father Ona (Duncan) Tillotson and Lawrence Tillotson, step-Dad Willard Freeman, brother Ivan Tillotson, sister Carol Wynn, brother Dennis Tillotson, Sonny Tillotson and Carl Tillotson.
In 1968 she met Tyrone Mitchell and married in 1971. Together they had four children. Pamela is survived by her daughter Buffy and her husband Raymond McQuillen; daughters Cassandra Mitchell, Sunee Mitchell, son Tyrone Earl Mitchell & his wife Natasha Knight, her niece and nephews she helped raise – Tuesday Jenkins, Cedric, Troy, Ron and Marlon Jack.
Grammie leaves behind 8 grandchildren that she loved as only a grandmother can love; Kes-e-loh McQuillen, Richard Dollar, Kailey Katz, Tey-wu-lauw McQuillen, Kiyraa Miller, Tyrone Mitchell-Miller, William McQuillen and Lucas Mitchell.
Pamela used her time in this world to advance Native American Education programs. Early in her career she worked for the Ukiah Unified School District and the Mendocino County Indian Education Center and started one of the first Native American Head Start programs. For her work she received several acknowledgments and awards from tribal government officials and the State of California Governor’s office. She retired from the field after 22 years and transitioned into the Indian Gaming industry. She thoroughly enjoyed working for the local tribal casino’s; Coyote Valley Casino and the Hopland Casino.
She retired in 2004 to spend as much time as she could with her grandchildren. She loved to watch them play soccer, baseball, basketball and football. She would travel hours to watch her grandchildren play in tournaments. It was her greatest joy. She lived in Crescent City and Klamath for years and made numerous friends over the years.
The past five years Pamela thoroughly enjoyed the internet always watching classic shows on Netflix, and listening to classic country, 60’s rock and blues on YouTube. Lately she had been enjoying Facebook and Candy Crush.
Pamela will leave Ukiah on Friday, September 15th at 3:00 p.m. from the Eversole Mortuary to the Covelo Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at the Covelo Methodist Church Saturday, September 16th at 10:00 a.m. A dinner will be held at the home of Illace Freeman immediately following the church service. There will not be a graveside service, Pamela wanted to be cremated.
