(December 21, 1927 to June 24, 2017 )
Resident of Ukiah, California

Obituary:
John Edward Myers was born in San Francisco, California on December 22, 1927 to Ben and Lily Myers. He passed away June 24, 2017, with his wife Joyce at his bedside. John was raised in Lakeport, with his four brothers; Albert, Bob, Don and Charley. Then in 1942, the family moved to Ukiah, when his father Ben was promoted to Captain of the California Highway Patrol for Lake and Mendocino counties. John attended Lakeport Union School, Ukiah Grammar School class of 1942 and Ukiah High school graduating class of 1946. He was Class President and remained a leader to insure a class reunion was held every five years.
One year after graduating, he married his classmate Joyce Poma, on June 28, 1947. He then started his floor covering career, working for Venturi & Eckman. After hours and weekends he played baseball for the Talmage Sluggers and the Ukiah Merchants. In February 1948, he signed a contract with the New York Giants and reported to Woodland, California to begin Spring Training. He was doing well until he injured his shoulder when he hit a wall. He came back home to work. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
After his service he returned to Ukiah, where he and Joyce started their own floor covering business. Andrea, their daughter, was born April 2, 1955.
During these years Joyce and John helped build three homes they lived in: on Cherry Court, in Doolan Canyon and on Orr Springs Road. John always had a project or activity when he was not working on a job. His interests included archery, trap-shooting, old car restoration and antique collecting. He also loved out-of-state deer hunting. He was always in search of the big “rack” of horns. For two years he scored a Boone and Crockett record in the state of Wyoming for a “typical” mule deer set of horns. Joyce says “We ate a lot of deer meat and jerky.”
After twenty-five years in the floor covering business, John and Joyce began developing and building homes in Redwood Valley. When John was 72, he and Joyce planted 17 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. After a few years he decided to retire. John sold the vineyard to neighbors Rusty and Maria Martinson.
He loved the way they took care of this property and enjoyed looking at the beautiful vines.
John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joyce; daughter Andrea (Mike Werra), grandchildren Lindsay and Martin Werra, his brother Charley and beloved sister-in-law Marie Myers; sisters-in-law; Sharon Poma and Peggy Kirkpatrick; his niece Lori Broin (Kevin) and family; nephew Randy Myers (Mike Flaherty); nephew Gary Myers; niece Debbie Stephenson (Bruce) and family; nephew Rick Myers (Peggy) and family; and nephew Tom Kirkpatrick (Sharon) and family.

John had many health issues and surgeries over the years. Parkinson’s Disease was the final and most devastating. He and his family appreciated the wonderful care of many health providers in the community, including Dr. Kathleen Persky, Dr. Ziad Hanna and Dr. Werra and caregivers in his final weeks. At his request, there will be no services. Donation in his memory may be made to a favorite charity or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
