Toivonen, Allan

Allan Toivonen - age: 87
(July 10, 1928 to September 06, 2015 )
Resident of Redwood Valley, California

Obituary:
On Saturday September 6th Allan Toivonen of Redwood Valley passed away peacefully at home with his wife Dolores, his son Michael, caregiver Kasa and family dog Shima at his side. He was born on July 10th, 1928 in San Francisco. The end came quickly after many years of failing health. His wish had always been to spend his last days at the home he designed and helped build on the property he found one winter day in 1983.

He and Dolores moved into their dream home in 1990 and spent many happy years there. Even when poor health restricted Allan’s activities he continued to love to relax on the deck that overlooked a small stream.

Allan’s association with Mendocino county went back to his infancy. His parents were both immigrants from Finland, with his mother’s first destination being Fort Bragg where her aunt and uncle ran the Finnish Temperance Hotel. Allan’s parents often visited Fort Bragg when he was growing up to visit relatives and friends in the large Finnish community there.

In 1970 Allan returned to Mendocino when he bought 10 acres near Montgomery Woods and built a cabin. The cabin was built with redwood from the property that he milled with a chainsaw. He hand split redwood shakes for siding. He came to know that he wanted to retire in the country and Dolores shared that dream.

Allan was an avid reader, especially of history. He enjoyed the company of friends and conversation. Until sidelined by poor health, spending time walking the long driveway on his property to see what was going on in the natural world was a daily activity. He loved relaxing by a warm fire and cutting wood for the three wood stoves in his home was fun, not work.

Allan is survived by his wife of 32 years, Dolores, his son Michael and wife Karina Nielsen, his daughter Lisa Morgan and grandsons Hunter and Joshua Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents Kuno and Anna Toivonen and his first wife Shirley Toivonen.

As Allan wished, a private memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Allan’s name to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or the Mendocino Cancer Resource Center.
