Elvira Venturi
Elvira Venturi died a peaceful death on March 5, 2010, at the age of 93, in Ukiah, California. She was able to live at her own home until approximately two weeks prior to her passing.
A long time resident of Calpella, she was born on the family ranch on December 25, 1916 to Batistta and Leonilda Viarengo. She grew up in Calpella with her older sister Rena, younger brother Louie and younger sister Norma.
On January 8, 1938, she married Mario Venturi from a neighboring ranching family in Calpella and had two children, Larry Venturi of Ukiah and Dorene Logan of Calpella. They owned and operated a bar-restaurant in Ukiah for approximately five years before purchasing and moving to a grape ranch in Calpella in 1943. They bought the bar-restaurant “Club Calpella” in 1946 and operated that for 20 years.
Elvie, as she was known to her many friends, was a noted cook. She could put together a lunch or dinner in a matter of minutes for unexpected guests such as Mario or Larry’s friends. Grape buyers would seem to time their arrival just before lunch so as to hopefully be invited to one of her large traditional Italian meals.
Mario and Elvie were long-time members of the Sons of Italy. Elvie, her sister Rena Pasero, Adelina Solomon and Lily Rovera helped cook many meals at events during the years.
Elvie had a kind heart especially for animals, always having her favorite cat and dog in the house. She took immense pride in her garden and flowers, as having been born into a farming family of many generations, going back to the Piedmont Region of Northern Italy.
She was always a great sports fan, especially of her beloved San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49’ers, traveling to San Francisco to watch the games with her friends Bud and Jane Crofoot.
Elvie is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Mario Venturi. She is survived by her son Larry and his wife Doreen and their two children, Deana and Celestina, her daughter Dorene Logan and her husband Larry and their two children Lisa Galletti, her husband Tony and son Dante and Ben Logan and his wife Rachelle. She is also survived by her younger sister Norma Reber and her children.
She will be remembered as a kind, proud Italian lady who loved her family, enjoyed her many friends and lived life to the fullest along her 93 years.
Funeral services will be held at the Eversole Mortuary on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 2 PM. Entombment will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm at Eversole Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Sons of Italy, Ukiah Lodge, or to the Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire Department.
